Osteoarthritis and Chiropractic

It is a common notion that osteoarthritis comes with aging but it is not like that. It has been observed that older people are not necessarily sufferers of osteoarthritis and it is not necessary that they will have to suffer the pain. Even someone young can develop this problem.

OA or osteoarthritis is more common in women than men and affects around 20 million Americans. It is also known as the degenerative joint disease. The slippery tissue that meets in a joint towards the end of the bones is known as the cartilage. In OA, the cartilage is affected. The main function of the cartilage is to help the bones to glide over one another. In case of OA, the cartilage does not work properly and breaks down. Due to this, the bones do not glide and just rub against each other which results in pain, swelling and loss of motion. Recent researches have shown that OA is not due to aging although the general observation of OA is in people above the age of 65 years. Various factors contributing in OA are lack of exercise, joint injuries, family history of OA and overweight.

In order to diagnose osteoarthritis, there are patient examination, x-rays and clinical history that need to be taken care of. Tests like drawing fluid from the joint are at times performed. Continuous pain in the joint, stiffness in the joint after sleeping, sitting or not moving for a long period of time, swelling in the joints or a crunching feeling when the bones rub against one another are some of the symptoms of osteoarthritis.

In order to treat or even prevent osteoarthritis, exercise is an important thing to do. It results in strengthening of muscles around the joints and provides proper functioning and moving of the joints. The key factors that affect the seriousness of the symptoms are the patient's mood and outlook. Exercise helps in improving that and the weight of the patient as well.

Chiropractors have a good knowledge about the symptoms and treatment of OA. They can determine the effect of degenerative changes in the spine, knees, hips and other joints that can get affected. They can help the patient reduce the pain and get the condition back to normal. With the various methods that are available, chiropractors can help the patient achieve long term relief. So, consult your chiropractor in case you think you are suffering from OA and can notice the symptoms.

New Findings on the Link Between Rheumatoid Arthritis and Exercise

Many rheumatoid arthritis patients suffer from so much stiffness, pain and (amongst other symptoms) fatigue, that they tend to avoid exercise and movement. Sooner or later they may tend to avoid stairs and even avoid walking altogether, becoming increasingly sedentary and immobile. This may be thought as inevitable and even necessary: however, a new, reputable January 2012 study has found that lack of physical activity is an extremely detrimental attitude for those who suffer from this joint disease. Thus, appropriate forms of exercise may well spare your body from further damage or at least contribute to postponing health crises due to this self-attacking illness.

Even though in the past doctors used to recommend plenty of rest to rheumatoid arthritis sufferers, it is now becoming clear that physical activity is in fact much more important, even essential; unfortunately this new study has also found that almost half of those affected tend to be very sedentary, to the point of risking dire consequences.

Unlike common belief, it has now been shown that being physically active is key to maintaining joint flexibility, joint movement, joint strength and even to keep stiffness and pain at bay, and that this is true for all ages. Whilst it may be wise to rest your joint during a flare up (the acute, temporary phases of rheumatoid arthritis), as soon as symptoms are back to being 'chronic rather than acute', sufferers must resume or start appropriate physical activity on a daily basis. Appropriate exercise is generally understood to be moderate but regular, such as cycling, swimming (the best activity for those whose rheumatoid arthritis is severe) and brisk walking.

It is understanding that, whilst one feels pain and stiffness (and often fatigue), the most desired choice of action is rest and the minimization of physical activity; however, resuming or beginning a regime of moderate exercise, to be undertaken daily for one hour (or at least for about 10 minutes several times a day) is essential for joint health. Moreover, since rheumatoid arthritis often affects your heart health, keeping oneself physically active, undertaking regular exercise, is essential to minimize the already present risk of heart disease.

So, if you can, it is important to put your wheelchair aside and start physical activity: this will not only help your joints but also increase the chances of having better cardiovascular health, now and in the long term. The key is to find the appropriate type of exercises for you..

Hand Surgery - A Useful Solution to Get Rid of Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis can be extremely painful and make every day activities become increasingly difficult and frustrating to deal with. It can strike at any age, but most commonly begins near the age of 40. There still is not a single cause that can be pinpointed, nor any guaranteed prevention methods. In fact, it usually isn't even detected until symptoms are already visible.

There are medications available that can help relieve the pain and there are some that can help stop the rapid progression of this disease; however, rheumatoid often causes major deformities of the hand, making mobility severely restricted. In these cases, sometimes the best answer is hand surgery.

Signs of rheumatoid arthritis, which most commonly occurs in the hands but can also affect the feet and other joints, usually begin with noticeable inflammation of the area. Most people find themselves waking up feeling stiffness or pain that lasts for up to an hour.

As arthritis progresses, the joints continue to deteriorate, making movement increasingly difficult and eventually causing deformation. The fingers often become twisted at odd angles although there is no one single pattern that may occur.

For some patients, if caught early on medication may be enough to treat symptoms; however, very severe and late stage rheumatoid arthritis can often benefit from surgery. Many people are able to return back to their former jobs or continue to do hobbies they enjoyed in the past that have become too painful or difficult to continue due to complications, such as art and exercise.

If you find that arthritis is adversely affecting your life and causing great physical pain as well as emotional distress, you may want to seek a consultation about possibly undergoing operation.

Hand surgery will vary depending on your specific problems or deformity, but commonly the tendons will be repaired, reconnected back properly so the fingers and hand can regain normal functioning and movement once again. If the joints have been significantly damaged, these may be replaced with prosthetics to improve aesthetic appearance as well as functionality.

Many patients find that their pain has been greatly reduced following procedure, the appearance of the hand is much more natural, and its functions are restored to a much better condition.

There are risks and complications involved with surgery, including infection, bleeding, blood clots, loss of sensation, and no improvement in the condition. Since this procedure has the potential to decrease mobility further, you should carefully consider all options. Most patients will find operation provides some degree of relief, much of the results depend on the preexisting state of the tendons and joints.

Surgeons differ on when during the progression of surgery is best performed, so you may want to consult with one as soon as you are diagnosed and research a few different views before making your own, well-informed decision.

Your general practitioner may be able to offer you referrals to specialists, and you will most likely want to visit with several before choosing which you feel most comfortable with.

Everything You Need To Know About Hip Arthritis

The main type of arthritis is Osteoarthritis which most affects people who are older, typically over 50 years old. A lesser type is Rheumatoid arthritis which mainly targets middle aged - elderly women. There are other types of arthritis but they are extremely less common than these two. The rest of this article will focus on Osteoarthritis which is almost 8 times more likely than Rheumatoid arthritis.

The basic definition of hip arthritis is an aging condition brought on by the general wear and tear of the hip joint over time. The protective cartilage that separates the bones that meet at the joint is worn down which opens up the joint for bone on bone and bursa contact, which leads to significant hip joint and hip flexor pain.

Hip Arthritis Causes

There is no single cause that is attributed to Osteoarthritis, there are several factors that can contribute to your chance of having the condition; genetics for example can play a large role in this. That being said, there are some things that have been linked to developing hip arthritis:

Weight

If you are overweight everything that you do will put more stress on your hip joint, which will accelerate any development of hip arthritis.

Posture

Similar to being overweight, when you have bad posture you put more stress on certain parts of your body than you should, the hip joint included. While there may not be many short term effects of this hip arthritis can be a long term result.

Injuries

If you have had any traumatic hip injuries (like a complete hip flexor strain)in the past you are more likely to develop hip arthritis. Previous injuries can cause scar tissue to develop, move body parts slightly out of place, and change your walking and sitting posture.

Symptoms

The nature of the condition means that any hip joint pain will only get worse as the cartilage continues to degrade, which means that it is crucial to try to recognize hip arthritis early on for treatment.

If you have hip arthritis you will experience pain with common everyday activities like walking, sitting, anything with movement really. You may also feel a lot of stiffness in the hip area and have trouble walking correctly.

Treatment

There are limited options to reverse the effects of hip arthritis other than hip replacement surgery. Typically this is put off as long as possible as any surgery comes with cost and risk of complications.

If you are diagnosed with hip arthritis you will most likely be recommended to try one of the following to reduce pain and limit further cartilage deterioration.

Lose Weight: It may not always be applicable, but for the reasons explained above, if you are overweight it will take some stress off your joints if you lose a few pounds.

Walking Assistance: No one enjoys it, but using a walker or a cane can really make a big difference in managing the pain by taking stress off of your hip joint(s).

Painkillers: Usually not the first recommendation, but if there is also inflammation present in your hip (often in Rheumatoid arthritis), you may be given painkillers/anti-inflammatories

Strengthening Routine: If you follow a hip flexor strengthening routine you can also relieve some pressure that is directly on the hip joint, which will reduce pain.

Arthritis Prevention

There is no way to prevent hip arthritis for sure, but if you follow the suggestions in the treatment section of this article you can help to minimize your chances of developing the condition.

Treatment For Arthritis In Fingers

Arthritis in fingers is, unfortunately, an all too common condition. As we age, arthritic problems in numerous joints can develop. When the pain is felt in the hands, it can have a major impact on the way we lead our lives, the swelling and discomfort that is swells up can be immense. If not treated, the condition can lead to deformed bones, and a loss of independence.

If you suspect that you have an arthritic problem in the hands, it is essential to seek a medical evaluation at the earliest opportunity. Your local family doctor should be able to diagnose whether the condition is arthritis, this may involve X-rays and blood tests to evaluate the severity of the problem and the possible course of treatment.

There are a number of anti-inflammatory drugs that can be prescribed to help lessen the pain and discomfort that is felt. These drugs address the symptoms of the ailment rather than removing the problem in its entirety.

It is believed that diet can play an important role in reducing the level of pain caused by this condition. Remove fatty foods and junk food from your meals and increase your consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. This change in diet will allow your body to get the vitamins and minerals it need to function properly.

Another option is to undergo a course of steroid injections. Steroids can provide long lasting relief from pain, but only when given repeatedly. There is also the risk of side effects from the injections, such as a general malaise and a feeling of irritability.

In severe cases surgery and splinting may be the best course of action to consider. Depending upon the extent of the arthritis in fingers, it can be possible to undergo a procedure where damaged tissue is cut away to allow for increased mobility. It may also be possible to undergo joint replacement. Splinting helps to support the damaged fingers, so that less stress is caused to the joint.

Properly Handling Arthritis In Your Horse

I'm sure you are probably familiar with arthritis and the pain and suffering it brings. It is a very common problem for people especially senior citizens. However, did you know that animals can also experience the pain and suffering of arthritis? This is especially true for horses.

Horse arthritis is a major concern for horse owners. Thanks to modern medicine there are new discoveries about how to detect arthritis in horses and the best methods on how to properly handle it. Your animals no longer need to suffer for nothing.

There are a number of different reasons for a horse to see symptoms of arthritis. Some of these include heredity, abnormal growth, loose joints or old injuries. While you can never be sure about what the cause of the pain may be there are ways you can help prevent it through taking good care of your horse's joints. The risk can never be totally eliminated, but you can make it easier through preventive measures.

Arthritis comes about when the liquid in the joints no longer provides the needed cushion on the joints. The reason is the fluid becomes thinner over time and eventually cannot provide the appropriate amount of lubrication on the joints, which you could imagine on such a large animal, causes a great deal of pain. Arthritis is painful enough on our joints now imagine it in a large horse.

One way to tell if your horse is suffering from arthritis is you'll notice it beginning to walk or move around gingerly and rather uncomfortably. It will exhibit difficulty doing normally easy actions such as getting up from a lying down position. Other signs of this painful condition include swollen joints, stiffness in movement and decreased range of step. It is important that you identify condition early on so that you can take the necessary steps to take care of it.

Once you notice sure signs of horse arthritis, my advice is to schedule an appointment with a veterinarian. They can help you tell for certain if your horse has arthritis and what steps you should take to deal with it. The veterinarian will probably run some tests such as ultrasound, fluid testing in the joints and other diagnostic tests so don't get scared. Once the veterinarian has enough information to make a diagnosis, they can then assess the severity of the arthritis and recommend proper treatment options. Horse arthritis treatments vary from equine vitamins, exercise or weight control.

Homeopathy and Homeopathic Remedies, an Answer to the Incurable Psoriasis

Researches have evidently proved that psoriatic patients experienced a momentous improvement in their disease manifestation as well as the quality of their lives after taking Homeopathic treatment.

Psoriasis, an auto-immune inflammatory disorder primarily affecting the skin has been classified into basic five types as plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular and erythrodermic. The disease is marked by silvery white scaly patches appearing in the epidermal layer of the skin. Lesions commonly appear in the skin above the elbow and knees but may appear anywhere on the body. It is a chronic disorder marked with a tendency to recur at regular period of intervals.

Causes of psoriasis are stiff unknown but in many cases there have been evidences of genetic predispositions. However, there are many triggers which are known to aggravate the prevailing psoriatic conditions thereby making it a challenging condition to be treated.

Major stressor causes include:

  • Stress

  • Cold Climatic Condition

  • Discontinuing certain medicines like corticosteroids

  • Injury

Flaring up of the disease can be brought about by injury to the skin known as Koebner Phenomena. Psoriasis may affect the joint and cause severe forms of arthropathies known as psoriatic arthropathy or psoriatic arthritis.

Homeopathy believes that psoriasis is an immune mediated condition brought about by faulty signals sent in the body's immune system. Therefore, Homeopathy works to stabilize the anomalous immune system. Homeopathic medicines arouse the body's own healing abilities by restoring the balance of the immune system and decreasing the person's susceptibility towards a trigger agent that aggravates the disease.

The duration of Homeopathic treatment varies from case to case depending on the following factors:

  • Time duration of psoriatic affection

  • Parts of the body affected

  • Extent of spread of the lesions

  • Any previous medications taken like steroids

  • General health and associated diseases

Homeopathic treatment of psoriasis has been very controversial amongst the people taking treatment for it as the immediate change observed by them after the Homeopathic medicine has been given for the first time, is diverse in different patients. Some experience a slight amelioration; some report no change whereas some report a bad flaring up of the complaints. Most of patients of psoriasis usually observe ameliorating results in about 1-2 months of Homoeopathic treatment and complete relief maybe observed in about 1 to 2 years.

The Homeopathic response can be illustrated through various cases treated with Homeopathy:

A 58 year old widow suffered from extensive psoriasis affecting her scalp, face, chest and both hands along with rheumatic complaints of the joints especially the wrist and ankles marked with great rigidity and swelling. Her history revealed that it was 4 years ago that she had lost her husband and she had a tendency to brood over the past unpleasant situations with lot of weeping. She had two sons one of whom was an earning member and the other studying. The family suffered from great financial difficulties as the earning son lived separately not caring for her mother or his family.

Homeopathic Remedy given: Medo 1000 2 doses (to be taken 12 hours apart) were given.

After 3 weeks: Aggravation of joint pains for few days. Sep 200 3 doses were given. One dose taken daily at bedtime for 3 days.

After 10 days: Some improvement in stiffness at the joints noticed whereas skin lesions healed up. Kali Sulph 6X, 5 tablets to be taken thrice a day with Sep 10M 2 doses to be taken 12 hours apart.

Skin and Rheumatic complaints improved within a month. Patient has had no relapse of both the complaints.

Rubrics considered:

  • Weeping while narrating her illness

  • Despair of recovery

  • Mortification ailments from

  • Psoriasis

  • Worse wet weather

Psoriasis is known to be a psychosomatic disorder having its root cause to be an internal ailment. Hence, its complete cure necessarily needs a remedial influence which can essentially eradicate the malady from its root. Homeopathy is one such system of medicine which believes in stimulating the immune system to eliminate the cause and thus, effectively treat the disease.

Osteoarthritis - Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Osteoarthritis (OA), also known as degenerative arthritis, is a type of arthritis that is caused by the breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage of one or more joints. Most cases of osteoarthritis are age related and have no known cause; and are referred to as having primary osteoarthritis. This is due to loss of protein in the cartilage as an ageing process, which eventually leads to degeneration of the cartilage and of the joint. Secondary osteoarthritis is caused by other diseases or conditions which usually include obesity, repeated trauma or surgery to the joints, congenital abnormalities, gout, diabetes and other hormonal disorders. Swelling, pain and stiffness of the joints are common symptoms of this condition, which usually affects the hands, feet, spine and large weight bearing joints such as the hips and the knees.

The Ayurvedic treatment of osteoarthritis is aimed at reducing the symptoms and slowing down the basic pathology of the disease. To reduce pain, swelling and stiffness, medicines used are: Triphala-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Punarnavdi-Guggulu, Maha- Rasnadi-Guggulu, Maha-Rasnadi-Qadha, Dashmoolarishta, Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras, Vat-Gajankush-Ras, Agnitundi-Ras, Vishwa (Zinziber officinalis), Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), Kuchla (Strychnos nuxvomica) and Guggulu (Commiphora mukul). Medicated oils like Vishgarbha oil, Mahanarayan oil and Mahasaindhav oil are used for local application on the affected joints. This is followed by a medicated steam fomentation of the affected areas using decoctions like Nirgundi-Qadha and Dashmool-Qadha. This procedure is called 'Naadi-Sweda', and is very useful in reducing pain and swelling of the affected joints.

In order to halt or slow down the progress of the disease, efforts have to be made to repair the damaged cartilage of the weight bearing joints. Medicines like Trayodashang-Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Sinhanaad-Guggulu, Laxadi-Guggulu, Shankh-Bhasma, Praval-Panch-Amrut and Asthishrunkhala (Cissus quadrangularis) are used for this purpose. These medicines have to be given for prolonged periods, sometimes up to two years in order to have a good therapeutic effect. Patients who do not respond satisfactorily to these medicines are given, in addition, medicated enemas of a special medicine called 'Tikta Ksheer Basti', which consists of milk boiled with several medicines. Repeated courses of this enema have to be given for several months.

It is important to treat obesity and other conditions associated with osteoarthritis. The use of a walking stick helps to relieve pain in a vast majority of people having mild to moderate osteoarthritis. Regular activities like swimming, walking and yogic asanas can help to reduce pain and stiffness in the joints.

What Are Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Why Are They So Important in Osteoarthritis?

Mesenchymal stem cells are progenitor cells, meaning they are cells that can differentiate and become other cells. And in fact, they are the cells from each all other cells are derived.

They are found in a number of adult tissues including the bone marrow, fat, synovium (joint lining), teeth, skin bone, and cartilage.

What makes these cells unique is that when they're cultured outside the body, they multiply quickly but don't differentiate into anything specific until a unique stimulus is applied. What that means is that by culturing these cells, a large number of them can be grown in a relatively short period of time. The therapeutic potential is obvious.

Given the ability to expansively grow a large number of these cells, it has been a dream for a number of investigators to harness this potential for various tissue engineering endeavors.

The area of most excitement in our specialty or rheumatology is osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting more than 20 million Americans. It is a disease of articular cartilage, the gristle that caps the ends of long bones within a joint. Cartilage consists of cells, called chondrocytes, that manufacture a matrix, in which they reside.

Picture grapes sitting in a gelatin mold. The grapes are the chondrocytes and the gelatin is the matrix.

Under normal conditions, the matrix has an ideal balance of protein building blocks and water. When osteoarthritis develops, the ratio of water to proteins becomes unbalanced. In addition, the chondrocytes begin to manufacture destructive enzymes and inflammation causing chemicals, called cytokines. Also, the chondrocytes stimulate the environment around the joint, including the synovium, to manufacture destructive enzymes and cytokines. The end result is damage to the cartilage and the premature wearing away of this substance.

Once thought to be an entirely "wear and tear" disease, it is now firmly known that osteoarthritis damage occurs within an environment characterized by inflammation as well as other immunological disturbances.

Attention to the use of mesenchymal stem cells to act as repair cells is driven not only by their ability to proliferate and differentiate into different tissue types but also by their potential to engage in the anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory battle taking place in osteoarthritis.

Also, according to recent research, it is now known that mesenchymal stem cells can produce factors that affect the local environment and protect the regenerative processes that have been started.

According to Chen and Tuan, (Arthritis Res Ther. 2008; 10(5): 223) " these properties make mesenchymal stem cells an ideal candidate cell type as building blocks for tissue engineering efforts to regenerate replacement tissues and repair damaged structures as encountered in various arthritic conditions."

The Reality of Rheumatoid Arthritis Pain Relief

There are some things in rheumatoid arthritis that might be hard to understand. Say the real origin of the disease and what triggers the onset. We all have the idea that arthritis is somewhat a product of an anomaly in the body which is basically an attack of the immune system against its own territory. That's curios really and somehow, this same condition manages to appear in their cases of health concerns as well. So it is not only exclusive with rheumatoid arthritis that this is happening. Nonetheless, this doesn't give much light on the issue. Not that it makes matters worse but it does not give us comprehensive hints on what truly causes rheumatoid arthritis.

Luckily though, unlike most diseases that has no known exact origin, rheumatoid arthritis offers some treatment options that could be helpful in finding long term solutions. Finding one that you are comfortable with and that truly provide permanent results is different. It would be a matter of trial and error on the patient and a sort of balancing game on the rheumatologist in search for the cure that would work well for a specific patient.

In order to come up with a system of pain relief for rheumatoid conditions, diagnosis has to occur first. Some issues, including those that are normal routines in diagnosis are likely to be addressed such as medical history, genetic predisposition, and physical examination and laboratory tests. Further, patients might also be reviewed using pain assessment forms. However, there is no definite and ultimate test that could provide all the necessary parameters that would asses the actual condition of the patient and the single treatment option that would bring the optimized results.

After the diagnosis, everything that would contribute to the search for an effective means to treat the rheumatoid arthritis will be used. Therefore some issues affecting the results could be ruled out and so only the main issues could be addressed.

There is no known cure for rheumatoid arthritis though. That's why the search will only be limited mostly to finding the measures that could answer towards pain relief. Pain is relatively hard to deal with though since each patient has his or her own tolerance and threshold against pain. Additionally, there are individual perceptions that could make the situation a bit difficult to handle.

Top these with the possibility that each person may have varying symptoms that could affect the outcome of pain relief against rheumatoid arthritis could provide.

There's some good news however, rheumatoid arthritis have some minor symptoms that could never get worse. Thus, simply pain relief measures could already help get rid of such symptoms or at least channel them away from the main course of issues. Such symptoms are easier to dealt with and require no significant attention.

The downside mainly focuses on the pain and treatment options are actually concentrated on finding treatments that could induce healing from the pain that occurs from the flares of rheumatoid arthritis.

Some treatment options that could follow the principles of pain relief could include the following:

Use of topical pain relievers in forms like creams, rubs, sprays, ointments that contain skin irritants, local anesthetics and other similar components,

Heat and cold treatment and their forms like thermotherapy and cryotherapy or even hydrotherapy,

Biofeedback which helps the patients overrides the pain sensations,

And some treatments that could induce the release of pain through Complementary and Alternative Medicine

These options for rheumatoid arthritis pain relief must be clearly discussed with your rheumatologist or physician. It is important that all issues, both major and minor ones are addressed so as to prevent some complications.

Artrosilium: Effective Arthritis Treatment?

Arthritis is one of the most widespread diseases today. Literally millions of people are affected by this disease, and not just in the United States or the United Kingdom. With over a hundred different variations of the disease, young and old may be affected, male or female. The result is that a rising number of the world's population are afflicted with painful, inflamed joints - with no definite cure in sight.

The reason I say there is no cure in sight is that even with all the tools at its disposal, conventional medicine has yet to find a way to permanently remove arthritis. Short of surgery to replace the affected joints, there is no known medication, therapy or program that can effectively cure the disease.

Despite the lack of an outright cure, there are several methods do deal with the symptoms of arthritis. These include medications of differing strength and potency, therapies to return lost flexibility, and, as previously mentioned, even surgical options to replace joints too damaged to be effectively treated by other methods. For most people, these methods are enough; others, however, may continue to look for other means of treating their arthritis symptoms.

One treatment method that people have been using is through the use of a product called Artrosilium. Artrosilium is a gel product made from organic silica, that claims to be able to provide effective and immediate relief from arthritis pain and inflammation. It is said that many people have tried it and found it to be highly effective for their arthritis symptoms, and it remains a popular option among the different products available on the market today.

But what makes Artrosilium work? First off, the key is said to be in their main ingredient, which is organic silica. Silica is one of the most abundant elements on earth, and is one of the most important elements to the human body. It is said to help the body make better use of iron, calcium, magnesium, and other elements in your body, and is essential for bone growth and development. It is also an important component of all elastic tissue, including the connective tissue of the joints.

One of the difficulties of making use of silica to treat arthritis is that the body does not easily absorb the element. However, it was found that making use of a gel helps the body to do so, allowing those with arthritis to find relief from their symptoms.

If organic silica gel is so effective, then, why should people use Artrosilium alone? There are, after all, a number of different products that offer a similar gel, and it would seem to make sense that one form of the gel would be as effective as another. One of the secrets behind Artrosilium is that it also makes use of two herbal remedies, namely Queen of the Meadow, and blackcurrant, to make the solution even more effective.

Queen of the Meadow is well-known to be an herbal aspirin, or pain-killer, which helps to relieve pain without any harmful side effects, while blackcurrant has long been used as an arthritis remedy to relieve pain and inflammation. Through the addition of these two herbs, the formulation of Artrosilium becomes more effective than any other organic silica gel products available.

One of the concerns of people who are considering taking the product is the lack of scientific evidence and testing to confirm the claims of the manufacturers of Artrosilium. This is understandable, given the wide range of products that seem to seek only to cash in on the many people who are affected with arthritis, without providing any relief at all. Despite this lack, however, Artrosilium has many supporters, many of which have actually used the product themselves, and say they found effective pain relief.

Most people who consider using the product have usually tried other products as well, and are wary to try a new product that claims to be effective with no scientific backing to support its claims. However, these people are also usually desperate for a pain relief and treatment of their arthritis, and often they will at least try the gel; a number of these people post their testimonies and claim they were pleasantly surprised at how effective Artrosilium was for them.

Of course, while Artrosilium is effective, it is still best to make changes in your life that can affect your arthritis directly. Simple things such as changing your diet to have more healthy food, to having more exercise, can go a long way in helping your get through your arthritis. Combined with the effective remedies found in Artrosilium, you could be well on your way to freedom from arthritis pain.

Aloe Vera - A Natural Remedy for Arthritis

Arthiritis is a condition which causes inflammation of the joints of the body. It comes in over 100 different forms and affects millions of people. Arthritis can have a multitude of causes, such as trauma to the joint, infection of the joint, age, weight, and genetics, to name a few. The most common forms of arthirits are osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease), rheumatoid arthritis, gout, psoriatic arthritis, and septic arthritis.

Those suffering from arthritis typically suffer from joint pain. The pain may be constant and it is caused by the inflammation around the joint, daily wear and tear of the joint, damage to the joint from the disease, muscle strains caused by forceful movements against the stiff joint, and fatigue.

Conventional treatment for arthritis includes anti inflammatory drugs and steroids to reduce the swelling of the joints and ease the pain that accompanies it. While these medicines do work, they may come with undesirable side effects, such as thinning of the skin and osteoporosis.

Fortunately, Aloe Vera is a natural and effective method for treating arthritis. In fact, the plant extracts serve as a potent anti-inflammatory and have been used for ages for just this purpose. Research has shown that regular use of aloe vera, either by capsule, concentrated juice, cream or gel, can help reduce the painful swelling of arthritis, without any unwanted side effects. In addition to reducing inflammation, aloe vera's unique make up enables it to successfully repair damaged tissue by regenerating cells.

To use aloe vera topically as a treatment for arthritis, you can apply the gel or cream to the affected area and gently massage it into the skin. Repeat as needed, even up to every 4 hours for severely inflamed joints. You may also take aloe vera orally, in capsule or juice form.

What's Good For Arthritis?

Arthritis is basically the breakdown of cartilage. The joints gradually lose cartilage, which is a gel-like, shock-absorbing substance that prevents adjacent bones from grinding against each other. Cartilage naturally protects the joint, allowing for smooth movement, and absorbing shock when pressure is focused on the joint. With damaged or weakened cartilage, the bones rub together, causing pain, stiffness, and swelling. Arthritis is more likely to occur as you age. Most commonly affected joints are those in the fingers, knees, and hips. As a joint continues to lose cartilage, the friction of the bones rubbing together can cause pain and joint instability.

Some vitamins and herbs are thought to be helpful in preventing or healing arthritis. Herbs, and other healing food, considered useful, include: alfalfa, angelica, black cohosh, blackberry, black pepper, blueberry, Brazil nuts, broccoli, burdock, celery, cherry, cod liver oil, coriander, cranberries, cumin, echinacea, fennel, feverfew, figs, fish, flaxseed, garlic, ginger, grape seed extract, green tea, hawthorn, horseradish, juniper, kelp, lemons, molasses, oats, onion, oranges, oregano, peanuts, peppermint, pineapple, primrose oil, red pepper, rosemary, salmon oil, shavegrass, stinging nettle, sunflower seeds, tea, thyme, turmeric, willow, and yogurt.

Vitamins (or foods rich in these vitamins), thought to be helpful, include: B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyrodoxine), B12 (cobalamin), B complex, beta-carotene, C, D, E, folic acid, multi-mineral, omega-3 fatty acids, selenium, and zinc.

Avoid consuming foods which promote arthritis, such as: alcohol, artificial additives & preservatives, artificial colors, aspirin, drugs, unhealthy fats, fried foods, meats, processed foods, roasted nuts, salt, soft drinks, sugar, and white flour.

If you are suffering from arthritis, try to limit consumption of caffeine, citrus fruits, potatoes, spinach, tomatoes, and wheat. Also avoid exposure to tobacco smoke.

Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Try to consume a high fiber diet. Get regular moderate exercise, and maintain a healthy weight. Muscle building exercises are helpful, but avoid aerobic exercises which can do the body more harm than good.

Winning the War on Osteoarthritis Joint Pain

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis, affecting about 21 million Americans. This degenerative disease causes limited range of motion in the affected joints and can affects the most basic of daily activities. In the worst cases, osteoarthritis results in debilitating pain.

Unlike other forms of arthritis, which are genetically linked, osteoarthritis affects people of every race, age and gender... athletes and couch potatoes alike. Despite the seemingly random nature of osteoarthritis, there are certain risk factors for developing the disease. Injury, aging and overweight all contribute to one's risk. Athletes, such as soccer and tennis players, are particularly susceptible to developing osteoarthritis due to the abnormal wear and tear on the weight bearing joints of their bodies.

Because of the progressive nature of osteoarthritis, continued use of the damaged joints causes the damage to worsen and pain to increase. Identifying osteoarthritis early can mean the difference between a lifetime of manageable or excruciating pain. Moreover, while it is possible to identify osteoarthritis early, it is impossible to cure the condition... this is why early detection and treatment are so vital.

In most cases, osteoarthritis develops over time and the pain is not constant. You may experience a stiff joint at first - particularly when rising from sleep or after prolonged periods of sitting. Perhaps your knee "gives out" when walking down stairs or crouching down. These could be signs of osteoarthritis.

The most important advice you may receive is to NOT ignore the pain and assume it will "just go away." If it is, indeed, osteoarthritis, the pain will not decrease with time. Taking action NOW is key to managing pain and keeping yourself healthy.

The first course of action many people take is over-the-counter or prescription anti-inflammatory medications, called NSAIDs. These popular medications are advertised as cure-alls for whatever ails you, but they do not come without risks. From gastrointestinal upset to stroke, for some patients the treatment is worse than the disease! In fact, NSAIDs do nothing more than decrease inflammation temporarily. As the patient continues to use the medications, a larger dose is required to achieve a minimum level of relief.

There is another option for osteoarthritis suffers wanting immediate and lasting relief. With a lot of medical practitioners onboard now, more and more people are turning to natural supplementation that has proven itself effective over and over again - glucosamine and chondroitin.

To understand why glucosamine and chondroitin supplementation are so effective, it is important to understand what happens in a joint affected by osteoarthritis. Another name for osteoarthritis - wear-and-tear arthritis - gives some clue - the repeated use of a joint, "wear and tear," wears away the cartilage cushion in affected joints. The cartilage is worn away too quickly to be replenished and inflammation results as the bones make contact with each other.

Whereas NSAIDs provide only temporary relief by decreasing inflammation, supplementation with glucosamine and chondroitin gives temporary and long-lasting relief. How? By giving the affected joints a booster shot of sorts with the very molecules needed to replenish damaged cartilage - glucosamine and chondroitin.

Ease Arthritis Pain Naturally

Arthritis is a disease that a lot of people around the world suffer from. It comes in many forms, and can severely affect the quality of life of people that have it. The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis. This is a degenerative disease that affects the cartilage. Cartilage is the cushion in between the joints, so when this starts to deteriorate there is a lot more friction occurring in the joint. This means that the bones are rubbing together and there will be a lot of pain when doing even simple tasks. Osteoarthritis affects a lot of the population, it is more common in the elderly, however there are many cases reported in all age groups. The other common form of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis. This is an autoimmune disease and it also affects the joints. Typically you see it in people hands where their joints are all swollen. It is a very debilitating disease and you lose a lot of mobility.

Thankfully there are joint pain remedies available to help arthritis. You need to know that there is no miracle cure, and the sooner you stop looking for it, the better off you will be. You can find a lot of ways to help reduce your pain, and a lot of them are natural. You need not take drugs and harm your body, as you have more options than you may think. Anti inflammatory drugs will help to get rid of the pain, however they have a lot of unwanted side effects that can really cause a lot of damage, especially to your stomach. For osteoarthritis it is important that you consider exercise as an option to help. If you build stronger muscles around the joint that is affected, it is very likely that you will be able to take a lot of pressure off the joint, and therefore reduce the pain. You also have a lot of other options to ease the arthritis pain, for example if you have it in the hands you can get arthritis gloves. These will really help you reduce the pain in your hands and fingers and will give you a lot of dexterity back. You can also look at magnetic therapy as an option that can help you immensely. Although not scientifically proven, magnetic therapy has a lot of positive reports of pain reduction in arthritis sufferers. You can also look at glucosamine as an option. This is becoming a very popular supplement, as it is thought to regenerate the cartilage. It is a naturally occurring substance in the body and hence has very little side effects.

As you can see there are a lot of options to help the pain of arthritis. Once you stop looking for a miracle cure, your eyes will be open to a whole new range of joint pain remedies.

Keep Your Pooch's Arthritis at Bay With These Common Meds

Arthritis is one of the oldest and most common diseases on earth. Archaeologists have proven that even the dinosaurs had it. The word is Latin in origin and means "inflammation of a joint." It sounds simple, we know. But there is nothing simple about arthritis. ?At last count, there were over one hundred different types of the disease. In this article, we will discuss arthritis in canines and how to treat it.

The Humane Society of the United States informs us that there are approximately 77.5 million owned dogs in America. ?Thirty-nine percent of US households are home to at least one dog, making them the most popular domestic pet by household. Dogs are also the most expensive pet to keep. The average owner spends $225 per animal on veterinary visits. One reason dogs are more expensive than other pets is that they are more likely to develop diseases like arthritis.

One in five dogs over the age of seven has some form of arthritis, according to a recent study. The disease can inflame the joint and cause degeneration in the cartilage, fluid and bones of the joints. As you might expect, this often causes pain and discomfort in the affected animal. Let us take a moment to review the most common types of canine arthritis.

As we mentioned, there are hundreds of different types of canine arthritis. But since we don't have the time to review them all, we will focus on a few of the most popular types. ?Osteoarthritis, immune-mediated, infective and idiopathic (unknown cause), are the most common types of arthritis in dogs. ?Because they age faster than many other animals, osteoarthritis (literally bone and joint inflammation) is the most common form of the disease.

What is it?

Osteoarthritis is a joint disease that causes the cartilage to degenerate, which makes moving incredibly uncomfortable, even painful. The hips, the back and the shoulders are most frequently affected areas.

How to spot it

Every animal that has ever drawn breath on this big spinning ball we call Earth slows down as it ages. But arthritis is different. When a dog has the disease, he will refuse to engage in the activities he once enjoyed. He does this because the pain of moving is simply too great for him to endure.

More often than not, the dog will demonstrate less interest in taking walks or going outside. If the animal lives in a multi-level home, he may be reluctant to climb the stairs. Just as in human beings, pain and general stiffness is often worse in the morning. In advanced cases, it may be possible for an owner to detect swelling of the joints.

How to treat it?

One of the most tragic things about canine arthritis is that many pet owners simply cannot afford treatment. Visits to the vet and prescription pills can be incredibly expensive and many owners, particularly older ones, simply cannot afford them. Fortunately, there are inexpensive supplements that are safe, effective and natural.

Glucosamine

A popular natural supplement for humans who suffer from arthritis, glucosamine also works on dogs. ?Numerous tests have confirmed that glucosamine can help repair damaged joint cartilage by facilitating the production of a glycosaminoglycan, which helps build stronger joints.

If possible, it is best to purchase the supplement from a quality name brand.Like most medications for dogs, the pills must be concealed in an appetizing meal. Because most vets recommend larger doses to start, it may be necessary to pulverize these pills and mix them in with the dog's food.Otherwise, you pet will probably eat around them.

Anti-Inflammatories

As the name suggests, an anti-inflammatory prevents inflammation in the joints, which means it can alleviate pain, stiffness, and can even reduce swelling. ?Boswellia, yucca extracts, and aspirin are other affordable, natural anti-inflammatories. Yucca is a plant extract that acts as a kind of natural steroid that can help reduce pain.

Also known as frankincense, boswellia is a drug that works on the vascular system to help reduce inflammation on a cellular level. Finally, aspirin (the kind you find in your medicine cabinet at home) is an age-old anti-inflammatory that can help reduce pain and swelling in the joints. Always consult a veterinarian before you administer any new treatment.

Healthy Diet

When a young dog manifests symptoms of arthritis, it is almost always the result excessive weight gain. Just as in humans, too much body weight puts undue stress on the joints and causes them to break down before their time. A pet owner should work with her veterinarian to create a proper diet and exercise plan.

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

Known as NSAIDS for short, these prescription pills are the most effective pharmaceutical treatment for advanced arthritis in dogs. Unfortunately, they are also rather expensive. Online apothecaries for pets may offer lower prices for dog owners. Make sure you search the Internet before you purchase an overpriced bottle from your veterinarian. Your dog is likely an important member of your family, or at the very least, a trusted companion. Make sure her transition from puppyhood to adulthood is as pain free as possible with these helpful tips.

Everything You Should Know About Dog Arthritis

Dog arthritis is a degenerative joint disease that can result in pain and a reduced quality of life for your dog. It causes stiffness in the joints, which can make everyday activities, such as playing, running, climbing and even walking, unbearable for a dog. Although arthritis cannot be cured, it can be treated through diet, moderate exercise and medications.

Types of arthritis

Here are the main types of arthritis found in dogs.

  • Osteoarthritis - This is the most common form of arthritis in dogs. It results in the loss of cartilage between the bones. Cartilage acts as a buffer to protect bones. When the cartilage wears away, swelling and pain develop. Obesity and wear and tear are the most common causes.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis - This form of arthritis is caused by a problem with the dog's immune system. The body attacks healthy cells and tissue, resulting in a slow erosion of the bones' cartilage. Rheumatoid arthritis is most common in smaller dogs.

  • Infective arthritis - This is caused by a type of infection in the joints. It can be caused by an injury to the joint or affect the dog through the bloodstream. It can cause lameness and if left untreated, can be life-threatening or result in amputation of the joint.

  • Acute traumatic arthritis - This is caused by trauma to the joint. The trauma can be repetitive motion or a one-time incident, such as a car accident. It often starts out with symptoms such as pain and swelling. It is important to have the dog treated promptly to prevent long-term damage to the affected joint.

  • Drug-induced arthritis - Some antibiotics, including penicillin, cause arthritis as a side effect. However, this is rare and once the antibiotics are discontinued, the dog returns to normal health.

  • Idiopathic arthritis - This is a type of arthritis with no known cause. A vet will often make this diagnosis after all diagnosis options have been exhausted.

Treating arthritis

There are several medications often used to improve mobility and reduce pain caused by arthritis. Aspirin is the most commonly-used drug, but it does carry the risk of side effects. Carprofen and Etodolac considered to be very safe and are more powerful than aspirin.

Glyco-flex and Cosequin include glucosamine and chondroitin as their main ingredients. These dietary supplements help build new cartilage in the dog's joints. Adequan is effective if used in the early stages of dog arthritis. It works to prevent inflammation and destruction of cartilage.

Surgery can be performed in some cases. Some dog owners have also used acupuncture with favorable results, but there is little scientific evidence supporting it as a viable form of arthritis treatment.

Work with your vet to create a diet and exercise plan for your dog. Your dog will still need daily exercise, but it cannot be too strenuous, or it can cause further damage to your dog's joints. A healthy, balanced diet will keep your dog fit and help him shed some pounds if he is overweight. Being overweight causes extra pressure on the joints and can exacerbate the pain and inflammation. By following your vet's recommendations, your dog can still live a long and fulfilling life despite having arthritis.

Natural Remedies For Arthritis That Actually Work

Arthritis is a painful, irritating and often debilitating disease that affects millions of people around the world. So it comes as no surprise that most vitamin and supplement manufacturers offer some sort of "treatment" or "miracle cure" to cash in on peoples desperation for relief. While there is clinical research that supports the efficacy of certain alternative treatments, the majority of natural arthritis remedies are nothing more than slick marketing ploys and empty promises. Below are some natural solutions to ease arthritis pain that are backed up by solid clinical research and often thousands of years of traditional use.

Exercise and a healthy diet are the most important aspects of relieving arthritis pain. Experts agree that our joints are alleviated of four pounds of pressure for every pound we shed and some people will see their symptoms disappear altogether with a 10 to 20 pound reduction in weight. It is important to choose an exercise that won't further stress the affected joints. Tai Chi is a gentle and safe activity for people with arthritis and countless studies, along with hundreds of years of practical experience in China, have shown that it is very effective at reducing the pain and suffering associated with arthritis.

Another effective treatment from China is acupuncture. Although there is little research with rheumatoid arthritis, studies have shown acupuncture is very effective at easing the pain of osteoarthritis. Traditional Chinese Medical doctors claim acupuncture works by influencing and balancing the life energy that flows throughout the body. By stimulating specific points located on the channels of energy called meridians, blockages are released and balance is restored thus healing the body of illness. Western clinical research has indicated that relief from acupuncture is a result of natural pain killing hormones, such as endorphins, being released due to stimulation of sensory receptors. Whatever the explanation, the results are less pain and misery for arthritis sufferers.

Omega-3 fatty acids such as those found in fish oil have been shown to have anti inflammatory properties. Several studies suggest that fish oil supplements decrease the stiffness associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Fish oil also helps to prevent heart disease which people with rheumatoid arthritis are at a higher risk for developing.

Research into several different natural anti-inflammatory herbs has shown great promise for arthritis sufferers.

Turmeric, a spice common to Indian and Middle Eastern cooking, has been shown to reduce pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. In one study, the active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, was actually more effective than the pharmaceutical medication. There are many supplement companies marketing turmeric capsules but using the spice available at any grocery store is just as effective and cheaper. Always purchase non-irradiated and certified organic turmeric.

The herb Boswellia has also been shown to reduce inflammation and improve the immune system. The immune system is often compromised in people with rheumatoid arthritis. Boswellia is available in capsule form from any health food store but do your research and purchase from a reputable manufacturer. When it comes to buying herbs, quality and potency are of the utmost importance and many manufacturers use inferior grade ingredients with little or no healing value.

Shilajit, a member of the herbal remedies from India, has been used successfully for centuries to treat pain and inflammation. It is believed to be a cure for all forms of arthritis and a powerful immune system booster. It is also said to repair and rebuild damaged tissue and promote healthy bones and joints. It is rich in fulvic acid which has been called natures greatest anti-oxidant and alkalizer. Studies have shown that an overly acidic diet can aggravate arthritis. There are some modern clinical studies that have confirmed Shilajit's use as an arthritis treatment but most of these studies have been conducted on animals. Still, centuries of traditional use indicate pure shilajit could be an arthritis sufferers best friend. The most potent form of shilajit available is the authentic black gooey tar-like substance which is collected high in the Himalayan mountain range. It has an unpleasant taste but is considered to be superior to the standardized extract powders available in capsule form. So far no negative side effects have been reported from shilajit. Before using any herb or natural health supplement always consult your doctor or health care professional.

Arthritis Treatment: Nerve Growth Factors For Treatment Of Osteoarthritis of the Knee

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and affects more than 20 million Americans.

OA is a disease of hyaline cartilage, the tough "gristle" that caps the ends of long bones. Hyaline cartilage consists of a matrix of proteoglycans which are complex arrangements of proteins and sugar molecules. In addition, there is a framework of tough collagen fibers.

Inside this proteoglycan/collagen matrix are cells called chondrocytes. The maintenance of cartilage is dependent on normal metabolic function of these chondrocytes.

Cartilage, when loaded or exposed to shearing forces, acts as a shock absorber. It will partially deform but springs back to its normal shape. It also provides a gliding surface which is facilitated by a small amount of synovial fluid, produced by the joint lining, that acts as a lubricant.

OA is a wear and tear disease of articular cartilage and results from the lack of ability of cartilage to keep up with excessive breakdown.

A disturbance in the matrix causes loss of cartilage resiliency. Inflammatory proteins, called cytokines, and destructive enzymes, called proteases degrade cartilage.

While there are no therapies that can halt the gradual destruction and wearing away of cartilage, there are some treatments that provide palliative relief.

These include analgesic medicines (pain relievers), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), physical therapy, exercise, and injections of glucocorticoids and viscosupplements.

A new treatment, called nerve growth blocking factor, was initially tested in clinical trials a few years ago. These drugs block nerve growth factor, a protein causing certain nerve cells to grow. This drug proved to be profoundly effective for relieving the pain of OA of the knee.

Unfortunately, a significant number of volunteers in the studies experienced complications, termed "joint failure."

"These included 83 cases of rapidly progressing osteoarthritis where bone and cartilage deteriorated and 30 cases of osteonecrosis, which is bone death caused by poor blood supply," according to Nona Colburn, a clinical reviewer with the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health.

The makers of these drugs feel these complications were due to patients using anti-nerve growth factor drugs along with NSAIDS and have recommended that if the drugs are marketed patients not use them alongside NSAIDS.

The manufacturers also have said that if studies are resumed, they will use lower doses of the anti-nerve growth factor drugs, limit the amount of NSAID a patient can take during the trials, and also screen volunteers for conditions that might predispose them to joint failure complications.

Modern Treatment for Psoriasis

The treatment of psoriasis is changing quickly as new treatments emerge in the management of this disease. The latest treatment to hit the world of psoriasis is that of biologics.

Biologic drugs, also called "biologics," are a fairly new class of treatment options for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. They are given by injection or intravenous (IV) infusion. Biologics are protein-derived drugs created in a laboratory from extraction out of living cells such as bacteria which have been engineered to make the protein.

The difference between biologics and regular immune system drugs is that the biologics attack only specific aspects of the immune system and traditional systemic agents have an impact on the entire immune system. Biologics can block the action of proteins in the immune system or can block the action of T cells in the immune system. Some of the proteins blocked by the biologics include tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) or some of the interleukins in the immune system. These are cells and proteins which play a large role in how people get psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis.

One T-cell blocker is called Amevive (Alefacept) which blocks the activation of T cells, which are white cells, found in great numbers in the skin of psoriasis. T cells mistake the skin for a foreign invader and there is a series of events that happen to inflame the skin and cause psoriasis. Amevive is delivered by injection and works within several weeks.

Enbrel, Humira, Remicade and Simponi are all medications that block TNF-alpha. TNF-alpha acts as an immune system mediator (a cytokine) that controls and promotes inflammation. In psoriasis, it has been found that TNF-alpha is produced in excess in the skin and joints of psoriasis sufferers and causes the rapid proliferation of skin tissue as well as damage to the tissue around the joints. If you block the TNF-alpha signal, it blocks the inflammatory cycle involved in psoriasis and related diseases.

Medications that block interleukin 12 and interleukin 23 include Stelara (ustekinumab). This drug is selective against the cytokines known as interleukin 12 and interleukin 23. They are found in large numbers in the skin of psoriasis sufferers. They are believed to be what activates the T cells in the body.

Biologics are all given by intramuscular injection or by intravenous use. Amevive is given by means of an intramuscular injection and Enbrel, Simponi and Humira are injected into the legs, abdomen or arms. You can get them at home and can be given by the individual or a family member. Stelara is a subcutaneous injection given at the doctor's office. Remicade is given by IV at a hospital or doctor's office. They are used in patients with an intact immune system who have moderate to severe cases of psoriatic arthritis or plaque psoriasis. They take several weeks to work and not everyone can find relief from them. In addition, you cannot take the injections if you have an active, ongoing infection.

Doctors generally screen for the basic infections before giving these drugs, including screening for tuberculosis. The risks of taking these biologic agents include giving the individual an infection. It is unknown whether or not the biologics affect a fetus so they cannot be given to pregnant mothers.

Side effects of taking biologics include frequent respiratory infections, having flu-like systems or having localized reactions at the site of the injection. Rarely disorders such as multiple sclerosis, eye inflammation called optic neuritis, seizures, blood disorders or certain types of cancer can occur.

Does Omega-3 Benefit Arthritis Aches?

More and more people are taking omega-3 supplements for their arthritis. Studies are now showing that omega-3 and arthritis alleviation go hand in hand.

But why? How exactly does omega-3 improve the symptoms of arthritis? Well, it depends what kind of arthritis you have. Omega-3's are not going to help with all types.

However, it will help with some of the common types of arthritis. This is because in many cases of arthritis, inflammation is the culprit. Inflammed joints create pain and stiffness, which is the end result of arthritis.

This pain and stiffness and lack of range of motion robs people of their enjoyment in life. Who can live joyfully when they are in constant pain?

Omega-3's, especially high quality fish oil supplements loaded in omega-3's, are natural anti-inflammatories. Simply put, they help counter the inflammation of joints that creates much of the pain associated with arthritis.

Now, omega-3's can't work miracles. If you have a very severe case of arthritis, you will probably experience some relief using a high quality omega-3 fish oil supplement, but it's not going to get rid of all your pain.

However, if you suffer from a modest case of arthritis, you will probably experience a much greater sense of relief since your inflammation isn't that acute yet.

In addition to omega-3 supplements, you should try to eliminate foods from your diet that help create inflammation. Some of the most common culprits include: processed foods, fried foods, fast foods, grains, such as white rice, white bread, and pasta. This of course includes foods like donuts, bagels, and many other things many Westerners consider staples.

It's not going to be easy changing your diet, but if your arthritis pains are bothering you enough, you will make the change.

With a change in diet to more healthy choices: a lot more leafy greens, eggs, grass fed meats, nuts and seeds, etc., and a quality fish oil supplement, you will most likely experience the omega-3 and arthritis pain alleviation that improves your quality of life markedly.

The Role of Spa Baths in Arthritis Treatment

A spa might give you unexpected relief from arthritis pain.

Soft bones or osteomalacia means that you experience extreme pain when you put pressure on the bones. Likewise osteoarthritis of the knee means that you are not in a position to do conventional exercises. That is why osteoporosis patients have sometimes turned to spa baths as one of the ways in which they can get relief. In the Edwardian age, many members of the upper classes thought that these spas could treat the symptoms of Paget's disease of the bone even if they were not yet clear about the sources of that condition. Some people suffered from Patellofemoral pain syndrome. This was characterized by knee pain in young adults. Spas have been recommended for Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), dermatomyositis and Polymyositis. Some of the benefits reported include:

1. Soothing effects on the bones: Although the scientific research on this is rather sketchy, some patients claim that they get relief from the spas. The bones are excruciatingly painful when you suffer from arthritis and therefore the anecdotal evidence has to be taken at face value. Patients are the best source of information about their symptoms because they feel the pain.

2. Relieving muscle tension in the body: Sometimes the arthritis patient will not get a chance to move their muscles about. That will lead to tension and the infamous muscle pull. Bathing in a spa will relax these muscles and give them some pain relief. It might be necessary to stretch after the treatment in order to maximize the benefits.

3. Dealing with aching joints: Often arthritis patients will complain of chronically aching joints. It is important that there are different options in addition to the non steroidal ant inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. Spas have been known to provide relief for aching joints.

4. Reducing insomnia: The intensive pain that is felt by arthritis patients might lead them to suffer from insomnia. This is a debilitating condition because the patient will always feel tired and yet they have no means to rest. Bathing in a good quality spa might induce sleep and reduce the incidence of insomnia.

Although spas might be considered to be ancient techniques with little scientific research, the reality is that many people swear by them. You can go on a warm spa in order to warm up your bones in the winter. It is also a good way to get out of the house and exercise those bones in a safe manner.

Arthritis of the Knee - Types and Treatment

Arthritis is a form of joint disorder that involves symptoms like pain, inflammation, and swelling in is the area where two bones meet.

The knee joint, for example, is where the ends of lower leg bones (the tibia and the fibula) and the thighbone (the femur) meet. Likewise, the hip joint is formed between the thighbone (femoral head) and a concave portion of the pelvis (the acetabulum).

Medically known as the tibiofemoral joint, knee joint is the largest joint in the body and is most frequently affected by arthritis.

This joint disease affects more than 46 million American adults and this number is expected to increase to 67 million by the year 2030. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), about 580,000 knee replacement surgeries are performed every year in the U.S. and the number is growing.

Types
There are three major types of arthritis that may affect the knee joint- Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Post-Traumatic Arthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA): Also referred to as the "wear and tear" arthritis, Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis, affecting 33 million people in the United States.

It is a condition that is caused by the combination of several factors, including overuse of joints, obesity, or aging. Also called 'degenerative arthritis', osteoarthritis is usually a slowly progressive degenerative disease in which the cartilage covering the bone ends gradually wears away.

It usually causes pain and limited motion, and often occurs in joints that bear weight, such as the knees, hips, feet, and spine. It is most prevalent among middle-aged and older people with active lifestyles.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA): It is an inflammatory type of arthritis that can destroy the joint cartilage. It is a systemic, autoimmune condition that causes the body's immune system to produce substances that attack the body's soft-tissues and joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis can occur at any age and generally affects both large and small joints in the body as well as the spine. Swelling, pain, and stiffness are often quite pronounced in rheumatoid arthritis, even when the joint is not used. The condition affects approximately 1.3 million Americans, and about 75% of them are women, according to the American College of Rheumatology.

Post-traumatic Arthritis: This form of joint arthritis can develop after any kind of physical injury to the knee in which the bone and cartilage were deteriorated. After the injury, the cartilage separates from the joint and bone and shatter into several fragments which float around freely and cause severe pain and joint stiffness.

A military injury, injury from sports, an accident, a fall, or any other source of physical trauma can damage the joint surface cartilage (osteoarthritis), destructing the mechanism of the joint and making it wear out. This disease may not surface until several years after a fracture, ligament injury, or meniscus tear.

The post-traumatic arthritis symptoms include severe joint pain, swelling, fluid accumulation in the joint, tenderness, and decreased tolerance for walking, sports, climbing stairs and other physical activities which stress the joint. It affects about 5.6 million people in the United States. The risk may be minimized by preventing injuries.

Treatment Options
The treatment for arthritis of the knee starts with nonsurgical measures, including lifestyle modifications; exercise; supportive devices; non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines; heat or ice treatments and elastic bandages.

But when arthritis reaches to a point where nonsurgical treatments have failed to relieve pain and other symptoms, surgical treatment will be considered.

There are a number of surgical treatments that can offer lasting relief. Cleaning out or repairing torn cartilage and reconstructing or replacing the worn out joint surfaces are the common surgical treatments for arthritis in the joint.

Joint Pain Or Muscle Pain?

The dilemma of understanding whether that nagging pain is coming from joints or muscles can be quite daunting, especially for someone who's been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, recently. Even for those who have not been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, joint and muscle pains can be considered the red alarm point. So what are they really and how do they differ? And most importantly, how can you tell the difference between joint pain and muscle pain? Joint pains are more like those you get right before flu. Remember that dreaded feeling of numbness in all your joints, as if you've been beaten up with a pole? Right! Now muscle pain is different because they are the type of pains you will get after an extreme workout.

Many people associate joint pains with rheumatoid arthritis, but they hardly consider muscle pains playing a role in the game. In fact, it should be acknowledged that if you have muscle pains around certain areas, especially around legs and arms, the culprit could be none other than joint inflammations that are commonly seen in arthritis.

The common symptoms of stiffness, pain and swelling in joints could easily affect the surrounding muscles and give you mixed signals. Therefore, recognizing whether the pain comes from a joint or a muscle may not be an easy task for someone suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

For example, pain in the feet is very common but no one really cares about it. Remember that if your body is aching or in pain, it is a signal that something is wrong, somewhere in your body. In fact, pain is your messenger that indicates danger. So ignoring aches and pains will not help you in any way. When your feet hurt, you tend to change your posture. The latter may cause stress and fatigue to your muscles. And with that, you've welcomed muscle pain too! These posture problems may then lead to digestion problems, problems of the lower back and knees. Do you see the link?

Similarly in rheumatoid arthritis, joint pains can run from arms to legs, spreading its inflammations all around the joints and sometimes affecting the organs in the vicinity. Therefore, if you experience muscle pains and fatigue on top of the usual joint pains, you should know that inflammations are devil dancing in your body.

According to western medicine, although there is no known cure for rheumatoid arthritis, some alternative treatment methods such as Unani system have proven to be effective in eliminating the condition. The bottom line for any person suffering from rheumatoid arthritis is to know that something has gone wrong somewhere and that if treated, or taken care of early, the conditions could even be reversed.

Regular exercise in healthy doses is a must for any one suffering from joint and muscle pain due to rheumatoid arthritis. Additionally there are health supplements such as Omega-3 fatty acids, SAMe, TMG and Glucosamine that can assist you in the process. Additionally, there are alternative healing methods such as reflexology, yoga and reiki that you can try out with zero risk and no after effects.

Offbeat Treatments for Osteoarthritis of the Knee

Osteoarthritis of the knee is one of the most common arthritis problems seen by rheumatologists.

The treatment varies according to the severity of disease. Conventional approaches include topical and/oral anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesics (pain relievers), glucocorticoid injections ("cortisone"), viscosupplements (lubricants), bracers, exercises, physical therapy, weight loss, and the list goes on.

Proponents of alternative therapies also tout the benefits of glucosamine and chondroitin- the so-called nutriceuticals as well as omega oils, herbal remedies such as garlic, ginger, turmeric, frankincense, stinging nettle, boswellia, and bromolein.

The purpose of this article is to introduce some not so well known but potentially effective remedies that aren't so well known.

The first are leeches. Leeches have been used for centuries for a variety of medical problems. However, one little known area of research is their use to treat osteoarthritis of the knee. In two separate studies, one at Beth Israel Hospital in New York, and the other in Germany, leech therapy, termed hirudo medicinalis, was studied. Leeches were applied in a four quadrant distribution to a patient's knee. Leech saliva apparently contains a variety of substances including hirudin, hyaluronidase, vasodilators, collagenase, and other chemicals that block inflammation.

Bee venom is another type of treatment that has been touted as effective for arthritis. The term for bee venom treatment is apitherapy. Apitherapy has been studied for both its acupuncture like effect as well as for chemical compounds present in bee venom. Its use is particularly common in Korea. Bioactive compounds found in bee venom apparently have profound anti-inflammatory effects.

Another not so weird but intriguing one is the use of pulsed electrical fields to treat arthritis pain. A company called Bionicare makes a device that fits around your knee. Electrical impulses using special wave forms are then delivered to the cuff. Clinical trials have demonstrated improvement in pain that is statistically better than placebo. How it works is still not clear.

Another "weird" treatment is dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). DMSO is an industrial solvent found in paint thinner. It was popular in the 1950's as a topical cure for many ailments. Studies showed deleterious changes in the lens of test animals and the FDA eventually approved DMSO only for treatment of a rare bladder condition, interstitial cystitis. Since it comes in both industrial as well as medicinal strengths, it's a substance that should be used very cautiously. DMSO has remained popular among veterinarians who use DMSO to treat racehorses affected with joint inflammation. Interestingly, DMSO has found a niche as the vehicle that drives diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory drug, through the skin by pushing the drug through the small lipids (fats) in the skin. This combination medicine is marketed as Pennsaid.

So in this brief article I've outlined a few weird but potentially effective remedies. Nonetheless, it's important to check with your doctor before considering any type of new treatment.

What Are Osteoarthritis Symptoms?

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that causes the cartilage of the joints to wear down after a period of time. While Osteoarthritis is most commonly associated with women over the age of 50, men can get this disease as well.  Unlike rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, two other diseases that affect the joints and may present with similar symptoms, this disease does not affect other organs.

If you are worried that you may have osteoarthritis symptoms, you should talk to a doctor who will be able to diagnose this condition for you.  Osteoarthritis symptoms present with pain, which is the dominant symptom when it comes to this condition. Pain and stiffness in the joint may be present when you are standing up after sitting for a long period of time, or after working the joint. While some pain may be considered normal after exercise, the degree of pain and how often you feel it may determine osteoarthritis.

As this condition worsens, you will notice that the osteoarthritis symptoms will also worsen. The pain will tend to increase and the joints will appear stiffer. With some people, the symptoms of this disease are so great that they become disabled. Others do not find the disease that debilitating and can go on with their lives.

The most common joints where you will experience osteoarthritis symptoms are in the spine, knees and shoulders. Many people who have osteoarthritis symptoms in the knees are overweight. In some cases, the condition can be relieved by losing weight.

The cause of osteoarthritis is primarily due to age, although obesity and previous injuries also play a factor in this condition.  Men will usually get osteoarthritis prior to the age of 45. After the age of 50, it is mostly women who suffer from this disease.  he reason for the disease is that the cartilage is made from proteins that, as we get older, are not as often produced in our system. Consider your body a machine and the joints cogs in the machine.  They need oil to keep running smoothly. When they do not get the oil, they stiffen and do not work properly.  This is generally what the problem with osteoarthritis is. The joints are not getting the oil they need to function - in this case, the cartilage is drying out.

Many people who experience osteoarthritis symptoms will see a doctor right away. Others will wait until the symptoms get worse and they are too bad to ignore. In some cases, such as with the knees, there is surgery that can be performed to replace the cartilage. Most doctors will recommend supplements as well as over the counter pain medication for osteoarthritis.  There are also medications for this disease that can help ease the symptoms.

If you feel that you have the symptoms of this disease, which is presented by a pain and stiffness of certain joints that is getting worse, you should talk to your doctor. There is no reason to suffer in silence with this very common condition that affects millions of people. About 20 million people suffer from osteoarthritis. If you develop the symptoms, see your doctor to learn your options for treating this condition.

3 Amazing Natural Cures For Rheumatoid Arthritis - Joint Pain Relief in a Flash!

Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease suffered by millions of people. It causes debilitating pain in the joints, especially in the hands and feet. Most people suffering from the disease believe the only way to treat it is by taking prescription medications. But fortunately, there are several natural cures for rheumatoid arthritis that are quite effective. They can work just as well as conventional medicine without all of the side effects. I highly recommend you look into these treatments, as they have worked effectively for many people throughout the years.

Devil's Claw

Devil's Claw is an herb native to South Africa that has been used for centuries to treat the symptoms of arthritis. In various double-blind studies, Devil's Claw has been shown to be as effective as Diacerhein and Vioxx, which are both prescribed to sufferers of arthritic pain. The herb is harmless to take and has very little negative side effects. As a result, it is considered one of the best natural cures for rheumatoid arthritis.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the popular natural cures for rheumatoid arthritis. By inserting thin needles into various points or "meridians" in the body, energy blockages are cleared up, and in turn, diseases and illnesses are effectively alleviated. Acupuncture also stimulates the release of endorphins, which block pain receptors and make us feel much better overall, without having to take prescription pain medication.

Probiotics

Studies show that restoring the body's natural probiotic balance alleviates many of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Probiotics are the "good" bacteria in your digestive system and researchers believe many of our common ailments are caused by a probiotic imbalance. You can take probiotics in supplement form but it's also important to integrate them into your diet by eating yogurt, pickles, and soft cheeses.

Major Types of Arthritis

The most common cause of disability in America is arthritis. There are more than 19 million adult suffers with more being diagnosed daily. The word arthritis actually means inflammation of joints but is used to describe over 100 rheumatic diseases. Arthritis affects not only joints but the surrounding and connective tissue. Arthritis is usually characterized by pain and joint stiffness which can come on gradually or appear suddenly depending on the type.

The major types of arthritis are:

Childhood Arthritis - This is an umbrella term used to describe many different types of arthritis diagnosed in children younger than the age of 16. Currently the CDC estimates that 1 in 250 children have been diagnosed with some form of arthritis. Juvenile arthritis seems to occur more often in girls than boys.

Fibromyalgia -It is characterized by wide-spread pain and fatigue of unknown origin. It is hard to diagnose because its symptoms overlap with many other illnesses. About 5 million adults suffer from fibromyalgia and is more prevalent in women.

General - This is defined as any form of arthritis that causes pain and inflammation of the joints. This is the generic diagnosis where a specific classification is not used.

Gout - This type of arthritis is characterized by uric acid crystals collecting in the tissues and fluids of the body. The affected joint will appear red, hot and be extremely painful. Gout is more common among men and is recorded in much ancient history.

Osteoarthritis - This form of arthritis causes a degeneration of cartilage and bone within a joint as well as causing an overgrowth of bone. It can cause deformity of the hands and feet but can also affect the spine, hips and knees. Its cause is unknown and treatment is aimed at relieving symptoms and improving movement and function.

Rheumatoid Arthritis - This type of arthritis affects the lining of joints. When the lining becomes inflamed it erodes the cartilage and bone leading to deformity as well as pain, swelling and redness. Rheumatoid arthritis is thought to be the result of a faulty immune system and has been found to have a genetic link.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus) - This form of arthritis is an immune system response which produces antibodies that cause widespread inflammation and tissue damage. It affects not only joints but skin, brain, kidneys and blood vessels. This causes not only pain but fatigue, skin rashes and fever. Lupus primarily affects young women and attacks black women more than white.

Provailen Reviews - How to Control Arthritis Pain Naturally

Arthritis can be caused by a number of attributing factors such as a virus, an auto-immune infection, a bacteria disease or simply how your body deals with a broken bone, but in essence all ailments may result in the inflammation and swelling of one or more of your joints, tendons, cartilage or ligaments.

The swelling is caused by the lack of fluid allowed to enter the joint, leaving them dry and brittle and difficult to maneuver efficiently, where after sometime they will no longer be able to function with loose elasticity and the smooth functioning they once could.

Are there actually any effective natural arthritis supplements?

There are a ton of "supposed" arthritis supplements on the market, most of which don't come with any teeth, which is why people turn to prescription medications, but these cannot be used long-term due the effects they have on your liver and kidney.

So up until now, aside from consuming a diet rich in Omega 3 Acids, there have been few effective natural arthritis supplements on the market that will deliver outstanding results.

So what will Provailen do for you?

The essential benefits:

  • Increase suppleness to your joints.

  • Relieve excruciating pain.

  • Reduce swelling and inflammation.

  • Relieve stiffness.

How is Provailen different from alternative supplements for arthritis?

Provailen contains no additives, it is 100% all natural with no fillers or dangerous toxins.

  • Absolutely safe for men and women of all ages.

  • Affordable and inexpensive.

  • 6 month money back guarantee.

  • Provailen will treat the cause, and the symptom.

Most non-prescription arthritis and prescription supplements only deliver symptomatic relief, they don't address the cause of the pain.

By simply pacifying the symptoms will not relieve you from arthritis in the long-term.

Provailen however contains the right ingredients that are absorbed straight through the synovial joint membranes deep into your tendons, joints, cartilage and ligaments, where it treats the root of the cause, providing sustained pain relief and results.

One Supplement that Treats All

Provailen is also one of the few natural arthritic supplements that treats osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, plus it provides additional pain relief for sufferers of gout.

Longevity Benefits

Extremely rich in anti-oxidants, minerals and vitamins and anti-inflammatory ingredients, Provailen may also boost your immune system, raise your energy levels, enhance your mental clarity and also help you have a sounder nights sleep.

What are Provailen's ingredients and how do they work?

There are 3 main organic compounds in Provailen that treat the cause of arthritis, alleviating the stiffness and returning suppleness to the joints.

1. Tonkat Ali

A formidable longevity plant in the Far East, Tonkat Ali is often referred to as the tree that cures 100 diseases. This plant will strengthen both your bones and muscles which means more support to the joints.

Traditionally used in Asian medicines to treat fatigue, the loss of energy is one of the obvious symptoms of arthritis, and Tonkat Ali will help inject a burst of energy into the body, helping you maintain an overall boost in all-round strength

2. The Reishi Mushroom

For 5000 years the Chinese have been administering Reishi based medicines to treat the painful swelling of the joints as this miracle mushroom is an anti-inflammatory bacteria 8 times more potent than Ginseng.

You might also know Reishi as Ling Zhi or Ganoderma and while not empirically proven in the West, there is strong belief in the medical community that Reishi alone is excellent at fending off cancers.

3. Capsaicin

The final ingredient is Capsaicin and is a particularly active ingredient in chilli peppers.

Capsaicin is important for 2 reasons:

a: It's a pain blocker. Capsaicun interferes with the chemicals that transmit pain impulses from your joints to the brain.

b: It assists in the absorption and breakdown of ingredients, helping your body reap the full benefits of ingredients which would normally not be fully digested.

These 3 ingredients - Tongkat Ali, Reishi and Capsaicun, means that Provailen should not just treat the symptoms but also get to the root of the problem and work to eradicate the arthritis pain for good.

The DANGERS of Prescription Arthritis Supplements

You have to be very careful when it comes to choosing arthritis supplements as the risks are "very real".

NSAIDs - Nonsterodial Anti-Inflammatory Drugs - dangers include:

  • High Blood Pressure

  • Dizzyness

  • Ulcers

  • Headaches

  • Digestive Problems

  • Kidney and Liver Problems

  • Damage to Internal Organs

Is Provailen Safe? How is it Different?

The short answer according to the manufacturers is yes. Provailen uses 100% natural and organic products, where clinical trials have demonstrated that it can be taken in combination with additional arthritic over-the-counter or prescription supplements.

Side Effects of Provailen

As it detoxifies the body, depending on your current state of health, you may experience some light itching, a mild headache or perhaps some loose stools for the first few days.
